Yaks are indispensable to high-altitude communities, offering essential resources such as meat, milk, and wool while demonstrating remarkable resilience in extreme environments. However, their long-term viability is jeopardized by challenges including transhumance system of rearing, limited genetic research, inbreeding, and environmental pressures. Recent advancements in genomics, molecular genetics and breeding technologies, such as CRISPR, and artificial insemination along with genomic selection, present promising avenues for enhancing productivity and resilience. To safeguard yak genetic diversity and ensure their adaptability amid climate change, sustainable breeding programs, and conservation strategies are imperative.
